Summary of work experience & training.
Food Giant Supermarket, Position: - Checkout Operator (Part time)
September 1995 – August 1997
My responsibilities as a checkout operator included giving the best service to the customer, scanning the food quickly and efficiently, being courteous and helpful, and making sure the right prices were charged.
A.M.F Bowling Centre, Position: - Team Member (Part time)
November 1997 – August 2000 .
My responsibilities as a team member include helping the customers to use the consoles correctly, showing them the different size bowling balls we have on offer, and sorting out all the customers’ queries.
I also have to prepare and serve food to the customers. Recently I have obtained a certificate in Public Health and Hygiene.
Another of my responsibilities is serving behind the bar, and providing waiter service to the lanes.
Carlisle Hospital NHS Trust: - I.T Support Officer (1 Year Work Placement)
October 1999 – September 2000
Program coding and testing — I was involved with creating a program for the year 2000 problem. This ran a Microsoft scanner and saved the result on the network.
I have been writing pages of HTML code for the hospitals Intranet site, typing in the code, saving it, and testing to see if it looks right on the screen. Also I check the web pages in different web browsers e.g. Microsoft Explorer and Netscape Communicator, because some times when the code is complex different web browsers displays the information differently on the screen.
User support — This was a major part of the I.T department. Answering the phone, talking to Doctors and Nurses etc to try and sort out the problem. A member of I.T or myself would go up and have a look.
Hardware installation and support — Sometimes on the older computers, staff will ask for extra RAM chips for their computers to make them work faster. Also people ask for C.D. ROM’s installed on their P.C’s to run C.D’s relevant with their work.
On some occasion older computer might stop working and we would have at replace a power supply or other hardware devices to get it working again.
Software installation and support — Quite a lot of staff members were asking for upgrades for different software packages. So we asked them to order a licence and when it arrived through the post we tried and install the software as quickly as possible. When I was setting up 150 new Compaq’s computers there were still a lot of extra additional software which users asked for, e.g. Corel WordPerfect and Corel Presentations.
Documentation — I had to write a user guide called “Security guide for internet E-mails”, which explains the importance of virus testing attachments on your E-mails and how to open them using different viewers e.g. MS Word viewer 97 and Adobe Acrobat. I had to write a report about the use of XML (Extensible Markup Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) scripts and how they work on the Internet.
Transferable Skills: -
Team working – University & Carlisle Hospital has helped me work in a team, and has given me the confidence to get on well with other people.
Accepting responsibility – University, Carlisle Hospital & A.M.F has given me the skill of accepting responsibility by allowing me to do my work independently.
Working under pressure – The bowling centre can be very busy on a night. I have experience in working under pressure, being organised and keeping cool.
Working to deadlines – At University there is a lot of pressure to get assignments / projects in on time, and I can do this successfully.
Problem solving – Employees at Carlisle Hospital often have problems with their computers. I am always courteous and I try to help sort out their problems.
Overall I am reliable, honest, and work to the best of my ability.
Hobbies & Interests
These include playing the piano, photography, developing my computer skills, driving, and going to the cinema. I am a member of the British Computer Society.
Personal Statement
I have chosen a career in the computing industry because it will allow me to develop my computer skills and will provide me with a job I would enjoy.
The industry is an interesting and rapidly changing area, and would provide me with many exciting challenges.
I have gained one-year relevant work experience in my career at Carlisle Hospital as an I.T Support Officer, which is extremely valuable allowing me to put theory, and my knowledge of computer software packages into practice.
I enrolled on the H.N.D. course in computing in order to expand my knowledge of computers. I am particularly interested in the development of relational databases.
During my H.N.D course I won the prize for best final year project sponsored by Michell Bearings based in Newcastle. The project was an Access database to control stock for two main analysers in the Biochemistry department at Carlisle Hospital.
When I graduated from my H.N.D course I decided to take the one year top-up to Degree level. I enrolled on a B.Sc. Applied Business Computing course which I took on many new and exciting units. My computer project this time was a children interactive multimedia learning program about “Science” for key stage three to help pupils revise for the end of year exams. The program asked the children questions with three levels of difficulty and allowing the children to pick from a list of four multi-choice answers. The program had an inbuilt scoring system and a movie to help explain the correct answer. This program was implemented using a software program called “Macromedia Director 8”, from which I have learnt many new skills.
